US Breaks Records in the Development of Large-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems

The United States has accelerated its commitment to large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), showcasing unprecedented progress as highlighted by the latest report from the American Clean Power (ACP).
The amount of large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) completed this year in the US as of Q3 already exceeds the whole of 2022. A remarkable 2,142MW/6,227MWh of large-scale BESS was deployed in the third quarter alone, signifying a 21% surge from the previous quarter and an impressive 63% leap from 2022.

The cumulative installations throughout the initial three quarters of 2023 totalled 4,500MW, already overtaking the entirety of 2022, which saw installations of 4,000MW. This notable increase isn’t solely in megawatts but extends to MWh capacity, with approximately 13,000MWh installed this year, compared to the previous year’s roughly 12,000MWh.

This surge in deployments comprised 30 large-scale projects, including 11 standalone installations and 19 co-located with wind or solar energy sources. Among these, the standout project was NextEra Energy Resources’ Desert Peak Project in California, boasting an impressive 325MW/1,300MWh, with its additional 75MW second phase also coming online during the third quarter.

Additionally, the development pipeline for the ‘under construction’ future of BESS in the US has seen exponential growth, now standing at a staggering 21.5GW/62.1GWh, reflecting a remarkable 50% year-on-year increase. This surge is prominently led by California with 9.3GW, followed by Texas with 3.2GW, and Arizona with 2.5GW, with a recent influx of announcements in the latter state.

The third quarter of 2023 marked a pinnacle in installations across various clean energy sectors, indicating a monumental leap forward in the nation’s commitment to renewable energy.
